2013 – This work was made at Proyecto Ace in Buenos Aires as part of the Crossover Residency. During the week-long residency, participating artists were asked to respond to a series of prints by Mexican artist Miguel Rivera exploring various representations of viruses. While the history of viruses is a dark one in the America’s, I wanted to take a positive approach that looks more to the present/future than the past. I decided to focus on the idea of laughter, which can also be contagious and in this way similar to a virus. This work also reflects on my experience living in Buenos Aires and the process of learning a new language by using the Spanish and English spellings that represent the sound of laughter. Laughter can be a great way to bring people together across cultures especially when communication is a challenge.
