About Jennifer Pickering
Jennifer Pickering is a contemporary artist born in Switzerland, raised in Vernon, BC and currently based in Vancouver. She has participated in international exhibitions and residencies for the past 20 years, including Mexico, Finland, Argentina, Abu Dhabi, Spain, France, Canada and the USA. In her work, Pickering explores complex systems of information exchange. Issues of access and denial, of privilege, class and where the power lies are central to her work.
Pickering holds a Master’s Degree in Studio Arts from the University of British Columbia. She is skilled in painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, installation, video and new media with a strong background in art theory and history. She is especially interested in creating site-specific interventions into public space. Pickering also studied at the École des Beaux Arts in the Atelier Gemignani and apprenticed with colourist and painter John Cooper, in Nelson BC.
Pickering was the Artistic and Administrative Director of the Alternator Centre for Contemporary for five years. During this period the gallery received national attention for their programming. She has 10 years of experience teaching youth, children and adults to explore their personal interests through art. Pickering is currently participating in the YMCA small business program and is preparing to launch her company, Crush of Colour, in the new year. Crush of Colour offers original residential and commercial murals with artistic designs that conjure the transformative power of art into everyday life.
